SOCT's 50th Anniversary

Since its inception in 1968, Special Olympics has worked to transform lives by inspiring inclusion and respect for people of all abilities across the world through sports. Over the last 50 years, Special Olympics Connecticut has provided opportunities that inspire courage and friendship and bring people and communities together.

Throughout 2018, we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary at our competitions and events. We are also planning a very special event on March 22, 2018 - a 50th Anniversary Golden Gala at the Aqua Turf Club. We look forward to seeing you at this grand celebration!

Shane's 50K for 50 Years Campaign
Our friend Shane Fitzsimons is running the Boston Marathon in honor of Special Olympics' 50th Anniversary!

"So here I am, signed up for the Boston Marathon on April 16th as participant number 356, as part of the 50th year celebrations for Special Olympics Connecticut, in the year that I turned 50!

My interest in Special Olympics was piqued by my parents' involvement in the first World Games in Ireland in 2003, which included my hometown of Kinsale hosting the team from Palestine. The community effort involved convinced me that I should become more involved, and Beau Doherty, now a good friend, cultivated my interest ever since.

Sports have always played an important part in my life and over the last 10 years, with no time for my first love golf, I became a keen runner to focus on my own health. When the opportunity to raise funds for an organization I love, by doing something I love was presented, it was easy to say yes to it. Let's raise 50K for Special Olympics Connecticut at the Boston Marathon!

The importance of the vision and mission of Special Olympics together with the enthusiasm of its execution by its athletes, employees and volunteers inspires me every day to be the best I can be and while I can't promise a fast time, I can promise my best effort, and maybe deliver a personal best along the way!"
